Mr. Backes joined Reilly Johnson Architecture (RJA) in 1996, and was named a Principal in 1998. Since 1996 he has focused on Justice Architecture and been involved in the planning, design, and management of many of the firm’s largest justice projects, including adult and juvenile detention, corrections, courts, and law enforcement.
From 1994 to 1996 Mr. Backes was a Principal with Pouw & Associates of Denver where he served as Project Manager + Lead Designer on several projects in Indonesia.
From 1984 to 1994 he worked with Gossen Livingston Associates in Wichita, Kansas where he was Lead Designer on numerous criminal justice facilities including the 23,000 sf addition to the Johnson County (KS) Juvenile Detention Center, and the 110,000 sf Kansas Dept. of Corrections Larned Mental Health Facility. He was also GLA’s lead designer for the 275,000 sf. Robert J. Dole United States Courthouse in Kansas City, Kansas.
Most recently Mr. Backes has been working with CDHS/DFM and the division of Youth Services on a six phase security electronics upgrade project at Marvin W. Foote, Spring Creek, Platte Valley, Lookout Mountain, Mount View, and DeNier. In addition, he has been working with the same agencies on the Facility Refurbishment for Safety, Risk Mitigation, and Modernization Project. The facility assessment was completed in April/ 2015 and Phases 1B-4A are either complete, under construction, or in design.
In addition, Mr. Backes has been working with CDHS/DFM and DYS on the $15.0M, 32,300 SF, 40-Bed Adams Youth Service Center project to be located in Brighton, Colorado. To date, we have completed Schematic Design.
